Review summary

Typewise Custom Keyboard offers a novel hexagonal layout with gesture shortcuts that users find faster and fun after getting used to it. Its privacy focus without AI prediction is appreciated. However, many users report frequent auto-correct errors, stability issues like freezing or keyboard crashes, and limited customization options. Missing features such as talk to text, glide typing, and numeric keys on the main keyboard reduce its appeal. Recent updates changed character input methods, causing frustration. Overall, it has innovative concepts but suffers from bugs and usability drawbacks affecting consistent experience.
Pros
  • Unique hexagonal keyboard layout feels easier to type on compared to traditional keyboards.
  • Gesture-based shortcuts like swipe up to capitalize and swipe to delete enhance typing experience.
  • Strong focus on privacy, avoiding predictive text and AI-based suggestions appeals to privacy-conscious users.
  • Customization options, while limited, provide some alternative layouts and themes.
  • Faster typing possible after an adjustment period and learning curve due to key placement.
Cons
  • Auto-correction is frequently inaccurate, changing correct words to incorrect ones.
  • Keyboard bugs cause freezing, unresponsiveness, or keyboard freezing the phone requiring restarts.
  • Limited customization: inability to resize or reposition keys, or fully customize key functions frustrates users.
  • Lack of basic features like talk to text, glide typing, and numbers on main keyboard reduces usability.
  • Mixed experiences with special character input and layout changes in recent updates leading to usability issues.

Update: The problem was fixed, now 5/5. Using a traditional phone keyboard seems like using a typewriter now. Swipe to backspace, not a giant spacebar wasting space, easy capitalization and accents for spanish (Áñó?¿). I would like to revert to 3.0. 4.0 has had many problems, much more difficult to swipe up for upercase on the top row. For a example i will attempt to type 10 upercase i's in a row:. I I. Ii .the i is no where near space or period, why does it do that?

Have had this keyboard for a while now and grew to really enjoy it. After the last couple updates it's basically unusable now. The keyboard will freeze and stay on screen when it's not supposed to, or just won't open at all. It will be fine for a few uses and then basically brick my phone until I restart it. A real shame because going back to my old keyboard feels awful.

Buggy and broken with inferior spell correction. Latest update has resulted in frequent freezing of keyboard within apps, leaving user unable to type. I really wanted to continue using this keyboard for the ingenious layout and gesture shortcuts (delete/undelete, quick capitalization, and cursor scrolling), but the spell correction has always been terrible (changing correct spelling to incorrect words and failing to correct grammar), and the latest bugginess makes this keyboard unusable.

The hex keyboard is so much easier to type on than regular rectangle keyboards!I friggin' LOVE that you can swipe up to capitalize a letter, like, it's about time, amirite? I do wish I could make some keys bigger and some smaller, because I often hit certain keys instead of the ones I'm going for, and I wish I could "hold and swipe" to move up and down in a text box, as well as right and left. Man, only 500 chars? Sometimes I wish I could swipe (glide?) to type, but it's not necessary.

What I liked was the privacy of the app. Typing accuracy and autocorrect suffered after switching to this app. I attempted the hexagon keyboard for a few months before switching to the traditional but It made my typos much worse. My biggest gripe is what made me switch. A bug prevented the keyboard from switching from numbers to letters, so I got stuck with numbers and there was no way to get back without uninstalling the app!

Used for a couple weeks and did get efficient enough at it. I liked the larger buttons. The layout and gesture shortcuts were fine. I did not like how it felt like it took up more space on my screen. There was also no talk to text functionality. I found myself switching back and forth just to use talk to text function.

Edit: dropping two stars because over time the auto correct has become a nightmare. It is constantly correcting words that were already correct to random unrelated words. "Talking" to "walking" (it just happened here), "hear" to "Heart" (again) among several others. Tapping the correct word on the bar has not helped.

I love the hexagonal keys and layout. Two things caused me to cancel my subscription and move back to SwiftKey: poor presentation of auto-correct suggestions, and lack of true customization. The auto-correct needs to show the suggestions and take into account my current mistakes. The customization needs to be more than just a few alternative static layouts that are not optimized for phone input. I need to be able to change the number, size, location, and function of every key, and have layers.

I didn't care about faster typing claims, I like trying out novel tech. I had some fun with Typewise, but after using it for about a month, it started to actually slow down my typing and became inconvenient. I don't think I ever fully got used to the key placements. I tried a typing game to get better. I was still much faster w/ a regular keyboard. While I liked some features like the backspace, I didn't care for swiping up for certain symbols. Also, no GIFs and no searching for specific emoji.

it took some getting used to, but im faster at typing now. my fingers instinctually know where all the buttons are. 🏆️ I just wish the predictive text was a little more accurate and a little less finicky along with having emojis as a suggestion (smile, dead, lol, etc), but that's not the worst thing. 🙂
